I don’t know if you remember, but the beautiful solar airplane that flew day and night across the United States last year was a prototype. Bertrand Piccard and André Borschberg were both training in Solar Impulse 1 — HB-SIA — for their big adventure, the first round-the-world flight powered by the sun.
In anticipation of the unveiling of the new Solar Impulse 2 airplane, we have a video released from the team at Solar Impulse that shows us some of the innovative design and technical work that has gone into building HB-SIB.
The Round-The-World Solar Airplane:
In May, it will be ready to take to the skies and make its first test flights. Right now, part of the team is putting the final touches to the plane and concentrating on completing the ground vibration tests. Others, in turn, are focusing on preparations for the Official Unveiling, due to take place on 9 April … so that you can follow this historic event live online, from 3PM to 5:30PM Swiss Time, on solarimpulse.com.
